4 things to do after your arrival in the Northwest Territories

  • Advice

Welcome to the Northwest Territories (NWT)!

Whether you have a study permit or a work permit, it's essential to complete certain administrative procedures as quickly as possible. Here are 4 steps to take as soon as you arrive in the NWT as an immigrant.

     1. Get your Social Insurance Number (SIN)

A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is required to work legally in Canada. Go to Service Canada to obtain one. Bring your passport, work or study permit and any other relevant documents. The SIN will enable you to benefit from social services to work legally.

     2. Apply for your NWT Health Card

Registration with the Northwest Territories Health Insurance Plan is essential for access to health services. Go to the NWT government website or go to a health centre to obtain the registration form. You'll need to provide documents proving your residency and identity, such as your work permit, passport and proof of residency.

     3. Open a bank account

To manage your finances, it's a good idea to open a bank account as soon as you arrive. In the NWT, you can choose from several banks, including RBC, Scotia, CIBC and TD Bank. These banks offer a range of financial services tailored to your needs. Bring your SIN, passport, work or study permit, and proof of residency to open your account.

     4. Visit the Intercultural Centre NWT

The Intercultural Centre NWT is the go-to organization for immigrants in the NWT. Available in English and French, they can help you with: settling-in, employment, health care, housing, education, child care and other needs. They can also refer you to services adapted to your situation.

New to the NWT and not yet comfortable in English? Francophone organizations can help you integrate.
