5 organizations to help you integrate as a francophone in the NWT

Welcome to the Northwest Territories! 

Wondering how to integrate into this English-speaking region as a Francophone? Are you wondering about job opportunities without being bilingual? Don't worry, many organizations are here to help you. Here's an overview of the resources available to French-speaking newcomers to the NWT.

1. Conseil de développement économique des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (CDÉTNO).  

Are you looking for a job or launching an entrepreneurial project? CDÉTNO can help you write your résumé, and provide support and advice on entrepreneurship. In addition to employment services, CDÉTNO provides you with a personalized settlement plan and directs you to services adapted to your needs.

2. The Fédération franco-ténoise (FFT).  

The FFT is your voice with the Government of the NWT. It offers a range of direct and indirect services in French covering the immigration, health and justice sectors, through initiatives such as :

  • Réseau TNO Santé: access mental health resources and referrals to French-language health services in your area.
  • La Communauté francophone accueillante (CFA): take part in regular cultural activities to break the barrier of isolation and better integrate.

3. Commission scolaire francophone des TNO (CSFTNO).  

Finding a quality French-language school is certainly a priority for you and your children. Whether you live in Yellowknife or Hay River, the CSFTNO offers your children the opportunity to study in French at École Allain St Cyr in Yellowknife, or École Boréal in Hay River. What's more, you can call on our school settlement workers for personalized support in integrating your child into the school system.

4. Collège Nordique Francophone (CNF).  

Would you like to improve your English or perfect your professional skills? Collège Nordique offers new immigrants free English language courses (LINC) at all levels, subject to certain conditions. You can also take language proficiency tests in French (TEF) and English (CELPIP) for your immigration procedures.  

The CNF also offers post-secondary training in early childhood education, business administration and public relations.

5. Médias ténois  

Keep up to date with the latest NWT news through your French-language media outlet on the pages of l'Aquilon newspaper, on Radio Taïga at 103.5 FM in Yellowknife or on the Web at radiotaiga.com.
