New free guide in French: Better understanding Autism in early childhood

  • Education
  • Diversity & inclusion

On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, Collège Nordique is launching a free explanatory guide on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in early childhood — available in French.

Designed for educators and early childhood professionals in the North, this guide provides clear and practical tools to better understand the behaviours of autistic children, support their inclusion, and adapt educational practices accordingly.

It covers topics such as:

• communication and social interaction in autistic children
• sensory hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity
• repetitive behaviours and comforting routines
• real-life examples from daycare settings
• tips for creating calming spaces and sensory rooms
• strategies to support transitions and manage challenging behaviours

A clear, practical, and compassionate resource to act with confidence and respect for every child’s uniqueness.

This explanatory guide on Autism Spectrum Disorder was made possible through funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, as part of the national Healthy Early Years project led by Société Santé en français and Réseau TNO Santé. It was developed within the framework of early childhood workshops by Marika Cyr, originally from the Îles-de-la-Madeleine and currently Regional Coordinator for School Inclusion in the Northwest Territories.
