Black History Month : Read about Erika's journey

  • Diversity & inclusion

At the heart of the celebration of Black History Month, it's important to highlight individuals whose journeys reflect not only professional success, but also a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion. Erika Cairo-Luce, with her inspiring story, perfectly embodies these values. Director of Operations at Collège Nordique since August 2023, Erika has risen through the ranks thanks to her determination and commitment.

A remarkable academic and professional career

From Guadeloupean parents, Erika was born and raised in the Paris region. Erika pursued an impressive academic career, starting with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Management and a Master's degree in Management and Business Strategy in France, before expanding her horizons at UQAC in Canada. Married with a young daughter, Erika embraces a variety of responsibilities at Collège Nordique, from administrative and financial management to human resources, technology and infrastructure. This wide range of tasks testifies to her versatility and commitment to excellence.

The experience of diversity in Canada

When asked about her experience as a Black woman in Canada, Erika highlights the positive representation and inclusion of Black people in Yellowknife. She feels part of a welcoming community that actively promotes the rights and visibility of Black people, a reality that contrasts sharply with the challenges Black communities may face elsewhere.

Personal inspirations and values

When asked to name a Black figure who inspires her, Erika immediately evokes her grandmother, a woman who showed extraordinary resilience in leaving Guadeloupe for mainland France with her nine children. For Erika, this life story is a powerful example of pride and determination. The values that guide Erika on a daily basis are perseverance, pride, commitment and teamwork, principles that are reflected in her professional and personal approach.

Black History Month: A heritage to celebrate; a future to build

Regarding this year's theme for Black History Month, Erika expresses the importance of celebrating not only historical contributions, but also each person's identity and origins. She emphasizes that an individual's value lies not only in their achievements, but also in their heritage and culture.

Hopes for the future

For the future, Erika hopes to see a Black community united and proud of its origins, history and heritage. Her message is a call for recognition, self-acceptance and solidarity within the Black diaspora and beyond.
