Richard Van Camp, recipient of the Order of the NWT

  • Culture & arts
  • Community commitment

We'd like to warmly congratulate Richard Van Camp, who is the honoured recipient of the Order of the Northwest Territories 2022. Tłı̨chǫ Dene author, Richard will be the first Indigenous storyteller in residence at the University of Victoria for the year 2024/25.

For Richard, a student of our Tłı̨chǫ language course from 2021 to 2023, it's never too late to learn your language and take responsibility for your culture. His new role as Indigenous storyteller-in-residence at the University of Victoria will help revitalize Indigenous languages and cultures among the student population:

“I hope that the time we spend together will enable them to reclaim their family stories, recipes, songs and traditions.”

Richard Van Camp, author of such books as The Lesser Blessed and Moccasin Square Gardens, is not only a talented writer, but also a passionate advocate of Indigenous cultures and traditions. His commitment to the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages and cultures is an inspiration to the NWT community.

Congratulations, Richard, for this well-deserved recognition and for your commitment to the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages.
